Dr. Metcalfe has been a great source of information and advice for my practice. He helped me formulate a business plan and was a reliable sounding board for many of the major decisions that helped my business stay competitive. Dr. Metcalfe is experienced in the medical, legal and business fields. This is such a great asset for a private medical practice seeking to grow. His straight forward, no nonsense approach is very easy to work with. I would highly recommend his services.

When my business was roughly $7M in sales, I decided that I was no longer able to wear the hat of CFO. Job descriptions of CFO’s seemed to be all about cash flow yet I determined my biggest need the next few years was actually access to cash. Len and I had a multiyear ongoing relationship where he had been teaching me how banks functioned. Rather than try to hire a cash flow oriented CFO, we thought it made more sense to hire someone who understood banks and brought Len onboard. He immediately went through our banking and borrowing relationships and modified them to lower interest rates, reduce covenants, reduce overall personal guarantees and setup a better Line of Credit (LOC). As we grew and required more and more capital, Len managed the relationships so that the banks, including ones who we were not currently doing business with, were aware of how our business was performing and what upcoming capital requirements might be. As a result money for growth was never a problem. Our last loan package structure consisted of over $7M in loans, only 3 covenants and no personal guarantee.

What I learned along the way is that there is a lot of talented financial management available to hire but someone on the client’s side who best represented the client’s interest was extremely rare. We obtained loan packages that were not only fair to the bank (they would not have agreed to them otherwise) but also a really good deal for us which is not common for smaller businesses. What Len brings to the table is incredible knowledge on what a bank is looking for in order to give you money (they do want to but often the difficulty is in presenting yourself in their language), the ability to get to the heart of the situation and explain it to both parties, and a direct yet easy going manner that resolves differences while avoiding confrontation. A banking and borrowing relationship is best cultivated over time and while Len is great at obtaining money at excellent terms initially, he is even more helpful as an ongoing partner consistently paving the way for downstream capital requirements.

I was faced with challenges and opportunities. I wanted to make sure I had a good loan package with the right terms, conditions, rates and fees. I also had opportunities to really understand what I wanted in my teammates and leaders and how to optimize those relationships for the betterment of my company.

Len directly talked with my banker and looked over my loan packages, including a new loan that I was about to sign. It helped assure that I was getting a good deal and what the banker said was actually accurate. Also, after many conversations over quite some time, Len helped me work through my thought process and then I really began to think about my team and leadership in a more effective manner.

Len was available for me when I needed it. I didn’t have to wait forever, or continually wonder if he’d show up. When you need him, he’s there. Len provided introductions to other key people for potential opportunities for my business. He was also available to listen to typical Owner/CEO war stories. It’s lonely as the owner and sometimes it’s good to be able to vent and allow someone who’s been there to hear and understand what we go through!

Len is very helpful, effective and he cares about people. He will help you make your business better. His “been there done that” experience and compassionate way makes him an ideal strategic partner add to your organization.

I met Len when he solicited my company for service. In talking with him, I knew it was time to allow someone else to look at our business to see why we were stuck: not moving forward or backwards. He saw where we had opportunity, we listened and then we came up with a simple game plan. He showed us how we had more value than we credited ourselves for. We grew by 32% that year. Not a typical 3%-5% yearly expected increase. Len can see things we as business owners overlook. Sometimes, it’s so obvious we doubt it could create an impact, but I’m here to tell you it does. The little stuff is what makes all the bigger things come together. Trusting Len was the best business decision we’ve made.

Over the last 30+ years Tony has worked with me on several successful business ventures, from startups to business expansions. Sometimes it’s not easy to work with physicians, or for that matter any professionals, but I can honestly say he has been the best business consultant a man could ask for.

I always appreciated Tony’s rock-solid advice. He does his homework and makes thoughtful recommendations. His advice is fair, honest and often courageous. He has worked with my businesses as a change agent. To name one example, he helped me grow a house call service for shut ins from a solo practice to a busy three doctor thriving business. On another occasion he worked with me to sell my family practice.

His faith in God and his personal commitment to doing the right thing has been an inspiration to me. He is no stranger to hard work. When one of my businesses needed him, he was there for me. He was doggedly determined and never quit just because things got difficult. When I had a problem, I wanted him in my corner and he never let me down..

I have had the pleasure of working with Len since 2004 when we were both employed by Bank of America. He was always responsive, knew his product set better than his peers and stayed on top of all his deals. The process was seamless when Len was involved and I always felt reassured he could deliver every time.

Over time, as we moved to other companies, we still had the opportunity to work together. When he revamped the Small Business Division of a large, regional bank, we partnered on SBA 504 projects and other hybrid projects. His success there was beyond impressive. As he moved to the private sector, first as CFO and later President, I watched him help a manufacturer grow and improve its efficiency and processes to the point where it became an attractive acquisition candidate and was sold to a multinational company.

As Len enters this next phase in his career, I am excited for him and his clients. His knowledge, professionalism and communication skills will surely benefit his clients and result in a successful venture for him and his associates.

Our company is growing and we wanted to discuss the opportunity of expanding the company to another location, either locally in St. John’s or outside of the city limits. Len helped us determine that we had the vast majority of market share for our local area and that growing would have to be done outside the city limits in other small towns. We plan on further working with Len’s team to analyze the potential of expanding our operations into new areas later in 2021.

Len’s ability to dissect my overall business health and provide me with insight on how to move forward without risking what we have built so far. He was flexible on schedule for meetings as our time zones are very different. Conversations were easy and informative. Len is a pleasure to deal with. I would recommend Morrissey Metcalfe and Associates to any small to medium size business looking to grow or find ways to streamline the business to be more profitable.

I’ve worked with Tony on a number of real estate transactions. In what can often be tense negotiations, he has the ability to communicate clearly and calmly. With Tony you have the best chance at seeing what is in front of you and a clear path to victory.

Among the other benefits from working on projects with Tony is that while we push hard to accomplish the goal it is usually a lot of fun. There is no rule that says hard work and tenacity have to be oppressive. Tony will help you realize that with some sense of fun and gamesmanship – that getting to the goal is half the battle – and if you can arrive there with a smile on your face – all the better.

Tony is very good at separating the wheat from the chaff. Often times in business things get muddled and it’s easy to let a distraction run you off course. Tony has a knack for knowing where to put the resources and how to get the most out of your efforts.

Good listeners are few and far between. Perhaps because it takes some amount of effort to consider the other person’s point of view and perspective. That is a critical component in collaboration. Tony’s eagerness to work together as a team to accomplish a goal has always been impressive. His ability to listen and ask relevant questions to help refine an approach to a problem has always been refreshing.

I would recommend Tony in ANY situation. I have often been in challenging situations and thought to myself – I wish Tony was riding shotgun with me on this deal – We’d have a leg up on the situation if he was. Tony is very competitive. He has a sort of quiet calm about pushing forward into the victory circle because is so determined to win. If you have a chance to get Tony on your side I’d highly suggest it. It would give you a distinct advantage. He sees things other people don’t see.

The other thing I’d like to add is – that while Tony is competitive – he is compassionate, caring and very interested in making things better – for the common good – not just for clients. Whether it’s on his street or helping on mission trips to impoverished villages – Tony Metcalfe doesn’t just “talk the talk” – he walks the walk. If you want to win and do it the right way, Tony is someone you want on your team. It immediately increases your chances of success.
